This is one of the most extraordinary structures in all chamber music — a single-movement work in seven interconnected sections, lasting nearly forty minutes, beginning with an unaccompanied fugue subject introduced by the first violin alone. The key of C-sharp minor was already associated in Beethoven's lexicon with spiritual depth and almost painful introspection, and this quartet plunges into that territory without ceremony and refuses to leave.
