Only Time

Built on a simple descending synth figure that repeats like a lullaby, this is the most restrained thing in Enya's catalogue and the most widely heard. The arrangement holds back — soft pad, gentle pulse, layered voices entering only at the chorus and then swelling into that unmistakable choral wall before receding again. The dynamic patience is what gives it emotional force; it never resolves upward into triumph, it just breathes. The lyric asks unanswerable questions about love and its duration — who can say where the road goes, who can say if your love grows — and the refusal to answer them is the whole design, a comfort built entirely out of not knowing. Enya's voice is plainer here than usual, less ornamented, closer to speech at the verses, which makes the multiplied choruses land harder. Its cultural life was accidental and enormous: released in late 2000, it became the de facto grief anthem after September 11th, attached to memorial montages worldwide, which permanently colored a song written about ordinary uncertainty. That association makes it hard to hear neutrally now. It works best in genuine solitude — a bad night, a hospital waiting room, a window with rain — anywhere the point is not to be cheered up but to be accompanied.
