Clannad
An Irish-language lament sung by a woman whose lover has gone for a soldier, and Clannad's 1976 reading strips it to almost nothing: voice, harp, the faintest breath of guitar. The macaronic structure is the song's oldest bone — English verses narrating loss, then the Irish refrain *siúil, siúil, siúil a rún* ("go, go, go my love") folding into the untranslatable *is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán*. Máire Brennan sings it high and near-vibratoless, with the ornamental catch in the throat that sean-nós singers use where a Western classical voice would swell; she declines every opportunity for drama, which makes the lyric's most brutal line — she'll sell her spinning wheel to buy her love a sword — land as plain household fact rather than gesture. The harp doesn't accompany so much as ring in the gaps, arpeggios decaying into silence the way the song's questions do. Cultural weight sits underneath: this is Wild Geese material, a woman's account of the men who left Ireland to fight other countries' wars, and the language itself carries the exile. Music for a very late night alone, or for washing dishes in a quiet house — it asks nothing and fills everything.
