Not every great song announces itself. This one settles in at a gentle sway, built on a loose, warm groove with guitar licks that feel almost lazy in the best possible sense — unhurried, comfortable, entirely at ease. TLC are at their most relaxed here, their voices carrying that particular quality of attraction described before it has fully declared itself, that pleasant pre-certainty of being interested. The lyric is full of observation rather than declaration — noticing someone, enjoying the noticing, not yet needing to do anything about it. There is a summer quality to the whole production, something about late afternoons and wherever R&B was happening in Atlanta in the mid-nineties, which was everywhere and nowhere specific. CrazySexyCool as an album was interested in contrasts — explicit and tender, commercial and personal — and this track occupies the tender end of that spectrum without softness becoming saccharine. It is the song you put on when you are trying to maintain the perfect temperature of something new, when you want to stay in the noticing a little longer before anything has to change.
