Finish the Fight (Halo 3)
Martin O'Donnell
Where the previous piece mourns, this one resolves. A piano motif enters delicately, almost hesitant, before strings gather around it with growing certainty. The tempo is moderate — neither triumphant march nor funeral procession — and that ambiguity is the point. The music occupies the emotional territory between relief and exhaustion, the feeling of a long battle finally ending but your body not yet knowing what to do with the silence. Brass enters in the latter half with something approaching grandeur, but it never tips into bombast; restraint is the dominant quality throughout. Melodically it echoes themes heard elsewhere in the same score, as if the composition itself is remembering its own past. This is music for staring out of windows, for the long exhale, for the walk home after everything is finally over.
