Interpretation

It starts with piano notes that fall like drops into still water, each one creating a ripple before the next arrives. Then Nagi's voice enters — and in 2009 this was a revelation, because Nagi (nagi*) sang with a brightness that didn't call attention to itself, that served the song rather than displaying technique. Ryo composed something structurally elegant here: verses that hold their breath, choruses that release it, a bridge that tilts the whole song on its axis and reframes everything you heard before. The subject is unrequited love observed from the outside looking in, a narrator watching the object of her affection gaze at someone else with the exact quality of attention she herself would give him. Summer constellations thread through the imagery — the sky as witness, the stars as the distance between what you feel and what can be said. It's fundamentally about the gap between an inner life and its expression, about all the stories someone carries that the person they love will never know. The song became emblematic of a particular style of late-2000s visual novel adaptation, the moment when anime was discovering what was possible with limited visual language and the right piece of music.
