SUN

"SUN" by Gen Hoshino is a sonic handshake with joy itself — horns, hand percussion, bass guitar riding a deeply groovy line, and a chord vocabulary borrowed equally from 1970s soul and contemporary J-pop, all assembled with the precision of a musician who is also, quietly, a perfectionist. Hoshino's voice is warm and slightly grainy, distinctly human in its imperfections, and he deploys it with a relaxed swagger that makes the considerable technical craft underneath feel effortless. The song arrived during a period when Hoshino was explicitly interrogating what happiness means and how it gets expressed — the result is music that doesn't just describe joy but structurally enacts it, with call-and-response patterns, brass stabs, and a chorus that physically wants to be sung along to in open air. "SUN" doesn't ignore difficulty — the lyrics acknowledge the complexity of choosing happiness — but it argues through music rather than words, demonstrating the case it's making by being, demonstrably, a beautiful thing to exist inside for three and a half minutes. It belongs in outdoor spaces: festivals, rooftops, beach afternoons, Sunday markets where light comes at a low angle and everyone seems temporarily content. It is also, perhaps, the best argument that technically sophisticated pop music and emotional generosity are not in competition.
