The premise of this track is strange and entirely earnest: a story told from the perspective of a robot girl learning, through the act of being listened to and loved, what it means to be alive. Robinson doesn't treat this premise as kitsch — he commits to it completely, and the sincerity is the point. The production is deliberately synthetic, bright and clean in a way that reads as innocent, arpeggiated melodic lines cycling with a clockwork regularity that mirrors the mechanical protagonist. His own voice carries the narrative with a lightness that doesn't diminish the genuine emotional weight: there's something about the lyric's core question — whether experience and feeling can be manufactured, whether something made can become real — that lands differently the more you sit with it. The track sits in a peculiar emotional register, simultaneously playful and quietly devastating, because the closer the machine gets to feeling, the more it illuminates what feeling costs. This was an unusual piece of electronic music in 2014, willing to be nakedly sentimental about artificial consciousness before that subject became culturally saturated. You'd play this when you want something that offers comfort without pretense, when you want to be moved by something and don't need the reason to be sophisticated.
