Interpretation

El Pintor found Interpol reconfigured — no bassist, Banks handling the low end himself — and something about that changed the center of gravity in their sound, making it leaner and slightly more exposed. This track carries that quality of leanness throughout: the arrangement breathes differently than classic-era Interpol, the spaces between instruments more pronounced, more deliberate. The guitar line has a restless, searching quality, circling back on itself without quite landing, and Banks' vocal is simultaneously detached and yearning, that paradox he navigates better than almost anyone in post-punk adjacent music. Lyrically, the song occupies the territory of displacement — the desire to be somewhere other than where you are, or someone other than who you've become, without those other coordinates ever being precisely defined. The "anywhere" of the title isn't escape so much as the abstract promise of transformation. It belongs to the particular loneliness of transit: airports at off-hours, overnight trains, the specific melancholy of being between places and not entirely certain the destination will be different from the departure.
