Interpretation

There is menace in this song from the first moment — a bass line that moves like something circling, deliberate and hypnotic, over which drums land with metronomic coldness and guitars contribute texture rather than melody, reverb-washed and distant. Justin Warfield's voice is the defining instrument: pitched low, delivered with a detachment that makes the obsessive content of the lyrics more unsettling, not less. He sings about desire as something predatory and helpless simultaneously, about wanting someone in ways that frighten him, and the flatness of his delivery suggests someone who has observed these feelings in himself with something like horror. The production is a love letter to Joy Division and early Depeche Mode — that particular late-seventies, early-eighties English industrial gothic — filtered through Los Angeles darkness-worship. Every element has been drained of warmth intentionally; even the climactic moments refuse to release into catharsis. The song became culturally embedded through film and television placements that understood its essential function: it is atmosphere-delivery, a way of making a room feel dangerous and sexually charged without being explicit. It belongs to late nights in spaces with dim red light, to the beginning of things that will probably end badly, to the specific thrill of knowing something is bad for you and deciding the cost is acceptable.
