Where the suite expands outward, this track turns the blade inward with surgical efficiency. The opening establishes a groove that feels almost comfortable before Hammill's vocal enters and makes comfort beside the point — his delivery carries a barely-contained contempt that is directed as much at the narrator as at the subject. The organ churns underneath like machinery that has been running past its design limits, and the saxophone enters not as melody but as argument, cutting across the harmonic texture with angular phrasing that never quite resolves. The rhythm section holds the structure together while everything above it tilts toward controlled collapse. The song is about the herd instinct taken to its absurd and lethal conclusion — the willingness to follow, to belong, to move with the mass even when the mass is moving toward the cliff. Hammill doesn't moralize so much as diagnose, and the cold precision of that diagnosis is what makes it disturbing rather than merely grim. The production keeps everything slightly dry, slightly close, denying the listener the comfort of distance or reverb. This is music for moments of genuine disillusionment with collective human behavior, for the hours after you've watched something deeply stupid happen and recognized that it was entirely predictable.
