Blitzkrieg Bop
The Ramones
Seventeen seconds is all the intro needs — a count-in, a power chord, and then the Ramones are already going, already at full speed, which is the only speed they ever operated at. The guitars are a wall, distorted and locked together in a unison that sacrifices nuance for pure mass, and the drums beneath them don't fill or vary so much as they drive, a metronomic insistence that functions almost like a dare. Joey Ramone's vocal has a quality that's hard to describe without the word "nasal" but that word misses the actual character of it — there's a sweetness there, almost a doo-wop softness, delivered on top of music that has no softness whatsoever. That contrast is the engine of the Ramones' appeal, and "Blitzkrieg Bop" is its purest expression: bubblegum melody, buzzsaw guitar, the collision of teenage innocence with teenage fury. The lyric is minimal to the point of poetry, a series of charged images — shooting, loading, getting on — that convey menace and excitement without spelling anything out. This is the founding document of American punk, the moment a group of kids from Queens decided that rock had gotten too complicated and cut everything down to its skeleton. It's two minutes and twelve seconds and it contains more pure energy per second than albums ten times its length. You reach for this when you need momentum, when you need to clear your head the same way opening a window clears a room.
