그렇고 그런 사이
장기하와 얼굴들
Jang Kiha built his entire aesthetic around a very specific register of Korean life — the casual, the mundane, the almost-boring — and "그렇고 그런 사이" is perhaps his purest distillation of that project. The instrumentation is deceptively simple: a guitar line with a slightly amateur quality, intentional in its ordinariness, drums that knock rather than drive, organ chords that belong more to a neighborhood bar than a concert hall. The whole thing sounds slightly off-tempo in a way that feels less like sloppiness than like someone telling a story with pauses in the wrong places, which turns out to be exactly where the pauses belong. Jang Kiha's vocals are deeply spoken-word in character, his delivery somewhere between a man telling an anecdote and a man delivering a verdict on his own emotional cowardice — deadpan, wry, utterly without self-pity or self-congratulation. The song describes a relationship that has settled into something without a name: not quite lovers, not quite just friends, both people knowing exactly what it is and choosing never to say so. In the Korean indie context of the late 2000s, this was quietly radical — music that found drama in inertia. Hear it on a Sunday afternoon when someone you have complicated feelings about has just left your apartment and you're standing in the kitchen not quite sure what the last two hours meant.
