Before trance had learned to be tasteful, Cosmic Gate were pointing telescopes at the ceiling and asking what was actually out there. "Exploration of Space" from 2001 is a document of a particular moment when the genre still believed the dancefloor was a portal to something genuinely unknown. The track builds on a hypnotic, looping synth figure that repeats with the obsessive quality of a mantra, each cycle slightly altered, slightly deeper, as if descending through atmospheric layers.
