Interpretation

Adrianne Lenker recorded songs in a one-room cabin in western Massachusetts during the first pandemic summer, and "anything" carries the tape hiss and room air of that decision like a second instrument. The acoustic guitar is close-mic'd enough that you hear string squeak and fingertip; a distant creak of the house occasionally intrudes and is left in. The song is built on a refusal — "I don't wanna talk about anything" — repeated until it stops sounding like avoidance and starts sounding like a plea for pure presence, for a love that doesn't have to be discussed to exist. Around that refusal she stacks images of unbearable specificity: kissing your eyes, the sound of your voice, dogs, the color of the water. Her voice is unadorned and slightly cracked, occasionally slipping into a breathy upper register that sounds less like technique than like emotion overrunning the throat. What makes it devastating is the tenderness that survives the wreckage — this is a breakup song that refuses to be angry, that only wants to sit near the person a little longer. Cultural weight comes from Big Thief's ascendance, from Lenker becoming the decade's most trusted writer of intimate American folk. Play it alone, headphones on, in a room with one lamp lit, when you want to feel something without having to explain it to anyone.
