Saxophone enters early and stays, threading through the arrangement like smoke in a jazz bar at closing time. The rhythm section is understated — hi-hat patterns more felt than heard, bass walking with a restraint that creates tension rather than releasing it. The guitar introduces occasional dissonance that never resolves cleanly, keeping the harmonic atmosphere slightly unsettled, sophisticated in a way that requires attention to appreciate. Shiina Ringo's voice here is more controlled than elsewhere in her catalog, delivered with a deliberate coolness that reads as knowing performance — she is playing someone playing a role, and the layers are entirely intentional. The lyric maps desire and dependency onto the geography of Tokyo's Marunouchi district, the corporate heart of the city where salarymen and power and money concentrate, and places a young woman in that space in ways that complicate simple readings. It's a song about the negotiation of power within desire, about the specific dynamics of attraction between unequal parties, rendered without moralizing. From her 1998 debut album, it demonstrated early that her range extended far beyond the guitar-rock she was also writing at the same time. This is a song for the tail end of the night in a serious bar, for rain-blurred taxi windows, for the spaces between the things people say to each other and the things they mean. It rewards patience and close listening in ways that louder music cannot.
