Francesco Tristano approaches this piece from a position of radical fluency — he is a classically trained pianist who has absorbed club music not as an influence to be processed but as a native language, and "Moderato" demonstrates that absorption without any visible seam. The piano writing is precise and deliberate, each phrase shaped with the kind of controlled touch that comes from deep conservatory formation, yet the rhythmic pulse underneath owes more to house music than to Satie or Ravel. The tempo is, as the title suggests, moderate — neither urgent nor languid — and this measured quality gives the piece an unusual poise, a sense of music that knows exactly where it is going and sees no need to rush. Emotionally it is poised rather than expressive, more interested in creating a state of attentive flow than in delivering feeling as a transaction. Tristano belongs to a generation of European artist-producers who have insisted that the supposed divide between concert hall and dance floor was always artificial, and this track argues that case without making an argument. It would work late at a small club with good speakers, but equally in a quiet room where someone wants music that occupies the mind without crowding it. The sophistication is worn lightly.
