Hania Rani named this piece after a mountain in Iceland, and the geography is audible — there is something in the way it opens, an unhurried unfolding of space, that feels topographic rather than narrative. The piano carries the entirety of the piece, no electronics, no strings, just a single instrument in a room whose acoustics become their own texture. The melodic material is deceptively simple, built from small repeating figures that evolve almost imperceptibly, the changes so gradual you only notice them in retrospect. What shifts most is the dynamic contour: passages of near-stillness followed by swells that are not quite loud but feel large because of what surrounds them. Emotionally it inhabits a zone of open wonder rather than defined feeling — not melancholy, not joy, but the suspended alertness of standing somewhere very beautiful and very still and understanding that you are small in a way that is not frightening.
